Dr. Elizabeth Matteson Jones is a native of Northern Virginia and is thrilled to be practicing orthodontics in her home town. She has had an avid interest in orthodontics since middle school. Congenitally missing a permanent front tooth herself, getting braces and a new false tooth was an exciting and confidence boosting experience. While attending high school at Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School, Dr. Jones began working alongside her orthodontist at his office learning to change wires and colors, and knew orthodontics was the career for her!
After high school, Dr. Jones attended The College of William and Mary, where she majored in Biology and minored in Art/Art History. For her independent study project, she spent an entire year sculpting and casting teeth in preparation for dental school. While at W&M, Dr. Jones was the head mentor for pre-dental students, as well as a member of Orchesis Modern Dance Company and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
Dr. Jones obtained her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from VCU in Richmond, Va. She was very active in the dental community while attending dental school. Dr. Jones was a regular on the Dean’s List, won the National Scholastic Achievement Award from Psi Omega Fraternity, was the recipient of the William C. Brokaw Award for her work in bringing access to dental care in Jamaica, and regularly volunteered for Missions of Mercy to bring dental care to underserved areas in Virginia.
Immediately following four years in dental school, Dr. Jones attended The Ohio State University where she completed a fellowship and residency program to obtain her Masters of Science and Certificate in Orthodontics. During her four years of fellowship and residency at OSU, Dr. Jones gained extensive experience with Invisalign, clear and metal braces for children and adults, treatment of cleft lip and palate, and surgical orthodontics. Dr. Jones presented her Master’s Thesis Research project on CBCT specificity and sensitivity at the International Association of Dental Research meeting in Boston.
Following completion of her Graduate Orthodontic Residency at OSU, Dr. Jones went through the rigorous 2-year process to become board certified in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. Board certification is a voluntary achievement – in fact, only one in three orthodontist is board certified! Dr. Jones believes that completing this important milestone demonstrates her dedication to providing the highest level of orthodontics to her patients and to keeping abreast of the latest research and technology.
Dr. Jones is married to her husband, Richard, who she met as a fellow dental student at VCU. They love spending time with their Shih-Tzu rescue dog, Josie. When not straightening teeth, Dr. Jones loves to swim, read, and play piano. Dr. Jones is an active member of the American Dental Association, Virginia Dental Association, Northern Virginia Dental Society, and the American Association of Orthodontics.
